Police complaints

Since 1 April 2013 the Police Investigations & Review Commissioner (PIRC) has been responsible for reviewing complaints about the police.

If you wish to make a complaint about the police you must first contact the police body concerned. Then if you remain unhappy you can contact the Commissioner to request a review of your complaint.

The first Scottish Biometrics Commissioner Dr Brian Plastow was appointed on 12 April 2021

If your biometric data (image, fingerprints, DNA) is held by Police Scotland, the Scottish Police Authority, or the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner because you have been arrested, or where your biometrics data has been taken because you are a victim, suspect, or witness, you can complain to the Commissioner if you feel that something is wrong.
