OVERVIEW

This role is one of the most significant, high profile and influential leadership roles in Scottish policing.

The successful applicant will lead Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary Scotland (HMICS) in looking at the state, effectiveness and efficiency of Police Scotland and the Scottish Police Authority, and  their meeting of obligations in terms of best value and continuous improvement in policing.

As Chief Inspector you will be responsible for leading the work of the Inspectorate and for ensuring that the resources available to it are used efficiently and cost effectively.  You will be responsible for planning and leading an annual programme of self-assessment and inspection, recognising the importance of high quality policing to communities throughout Scotland and in so doing you will promote the sharing of good practice and joint learning opportunities identified through the outcomes of the work of HMICS.

The post plays a key role in ensuring the efficiency and effectiveness of policing in Scotland, promoting and driving continuous improvement and providing a source of professional advice.  In so doing it will contribute towards Scotland’s National Performance Framework and its national outcomes.

HMICS Scrutiny Plan 2021-22 outlines their current strategic priorities, which include ongoing Thematic, Audit, Assurance and Collaborative Reviews with a focus on subject areas of policing where scrutiny can add value.

This plan is developed following dialogue with members of the public and key stakeholders, as well as information gained from previous inspections. It is under constant review and is designed to be flexible to adapt to emerging issues.
